Home-school coordinator under investigation for sex with student

The Indy Star reports the following:

School officials fired a home-school coordinator after an investigation found she allegedly had sex with a 17-year-old student, authorities said.

Desiree Lawrence, 26, was under contract with the Wayne Township school district as a non-teaching staff member, officials said. She served as a type of social worker, coordinating activities between the school and parents or other adults who are responsible for teaching students off-campus.

The story also notes that the allegations are under the investigation of the Marion County Sheriff’s Department and child protective services. I doubt the charges will go anywhere. Sex with 17 year olds is legal in Indiana unless you are the 17 year old’s parent, guardian, step-parent, or “child-care worker.” Ind. Code 35-42-4-7. “Child-care worker” means someone who provides care, supervision or instruction to a student for hire. It does not appear that this young lady’s job description fits the crime. Most people would not get too overworked about a relationship between a young adult (17) and another fairly young adult (26), although if true, it was probably appropriate to fire her.
