Charitable Accountability

The Fort Wayne News Sentinel takes the recent move by the AG against the Schwab Foundation (link) as an opportunity to review changes at another local charity, the Fort Wayne Aides Task Force:

The changes came after a theft/misuse of over $88,000 came to light back in September of 2004:

But, ironically, words like “professional” and “accountable” are being used to describe [ED Greg] Manifold’s handling of the loss of nearly 10 percent of his annual budget.

“As soon as Greg became aware of the problem, I was the first call he made. There was nothing hidden,” said Stephanie McCormick, President of the United Way of Allen County, which allocated $25,000 to the Task Force in its current funding cycle, plus more than $11,000 in gifts designated by United Way donors. McCormick and Manifold discussed ways the Task Force could tighten its money-handling procedures – an obvious need – and Manifold went to work.

As a result, McCormick said, the Task Force remains in good standing with the United Way. The Better Business Bureau of Northeast Indiana, which is taking an increasingly active role in monitoring nonprofit groups, has also given the Task Force a clean bill of health, President Mike Coil said. “Although, if something comes out (of the IRS review), we would take a look at that,” he added.

It’s good to see a follow-up positive story on an event like this.  Too often, the papers stick around for the gory crisis, but fail to take note when a recovery is made.

To bad Wayne County’s own Aids Task Force could not be salvaged after its crises.
