CAFO Update

Marcia Oddi neotes a follow-up on the EPA’s new pollution-for-research exchange program, naming 3 producers who have signed on:

From the Star-Press:

The three Hoosier producers are:

Mike Osterholt, 2104 E. Jay County Road 300-S, Portland, (192,960 laying hens).

Terry Finnerty, 10347 W. Ind. 26, Dunkirk, (1,200 nursery pigs and 6,800 finishing pigs).

Jerry and Ruth Warren, 6873 E. Randolph County Road 625-N, Union City, (4,000 finishing pigs).

Up in Jackson County, Karen Myers provides an update on the pig farm fighting to go in up there.  They are in litigation at this point:

Another new development — they “asked us” to negotiate with them and “even offered to have a mediator” to get this issue finalized, per one of the adjoining landowners. Link.

Second public hearing tonight on Plymouth hog operation is the title of a piece in the South Bend Tribune on Marshall County’s struggles with CAFO’s.  The plan commission is considering local regulations on CAFO’s at this point, but it is running into opposition:

On the table is language mandating any livestock operation required to get a permit from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management and/or the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to also get a special exception to operate from Marshall County.
