On Tuesday, the Madison County Board of Zoning Appeals approved a special-use exemption that clears the way for a 4,000-hog confined animal feeding operation in Duck Creek Township.

I would much rather have any CAFO next door to me rather than an ethanol plant and the 240 trucks per day that come with it.
At least we know what a pig or calf produces and can manage it effectively. We don’t even know what an ethanol plant emits. Broin states that what they emit is no difference than four cars, but I cannot understand why we would not take into consideration when zoning that the emissions of 240 trucks per day or 78000 trucks per year and the ethanol plant which will emit from annual figures submitted by Broin plants that they will emit just at or slightly under what they propose in their Air Quality Permit Application.
It is my belief that any operation where the government is limited to receive taxes only and not other kickbacks from roads, investments, and other side ventures, is what our government is using to make decisions for right and wrong.
The ethanol plant in Alexandria is much more dangerous than a CAFO. But the money to be made is greater by more parties. None of the 40 houses surrounding the 2/3 wetland property will benefit in any way by having the plant. This will also make the 15th place to sell corn in a 4 county area. Three of which are new ethanol plants (Tipton, Marion, and now Alexandria). Our local government will benefit by having more train traffic, selling them their water, increased accidents due to un-common traffic of trains and semi grain trucks.
I sure do wish it was a little smell from manure rather than having to raise my family in big city industrial park traffic emissions.
