Change in the Winds?

Randolph County Commissioner Kathy Beumer is calling for a time out:

After rejecting an ordinance that would restrict where industrial farms can be built in Randolph County, commissioners approved a moratorium Monday, halting the expansion of confined feeding and concentrated animal feeding operations in one of the state’s leading agricultural counties.

Star Press.

Although all 3 commissioners voted against the new ordinance, one, Ron Chalfant, did not like the increased setbacks between farms and homes, while the other 2 commissioners, Beumer and David Lenkensdofer cited the failure of the ordinance to deal with issues of air and water quality.

The CAFO ordinance will be sent back to the planning commission with a request to study water tables, ag parks, housing, odor, manure, setbacks and monitoring with the county commissioners voting 2 to 1 in favor of the moratorium until those issues can be worked through.
